Checklists

These checklists should be used throughout all phases of your filmmaking: development, pre-production, production, post-production, and distribution.

The film’s producer or director should be responsible for walking team members through the information in the checklists.

In addition to sharing these with team members to ensure they understand the film’s inherent risks; these checklists can facilitate conversations with funders and other stakeholders who will want to know you are making a best effort to protect the film and their investment in it — whether it was financial, emotional, or through hard work.

  • Do not share your completed checklists with anyone who could compromise your film and your team’s safety and security.
  • Do not email your checklists unencrypted.
  • Do not bring these checklists with you on location.
  • Print the checklists and complete them by hand and file in a secure (offline) location.
  • Email the checklists by encrypted email and house on an encrypted and password protected project management site.
  • Use code names for the film, team members, and participants.
  • Presume that any paperwork related to your film could be deemed discoverable evidence and used against you. Stick to neutral, factual, and non-pejorative language.
